What are those Time-Wasters Up To Now?

So, what rubbish emails and calls have there been to Brooklands Radio station in the last few days?

1.An email offering the chance to win £650 Tesco vouchers – although the email claims to be Clubcard Account, it’s from tjoempamail which is a lead generation company so it’s a con.

2. An official notification that our online banking service is going to be deactivated if we do not verify our profile within 24 hours – of course there is a link to click on. The email claims to be from Barclays but is from test.com so obviously a scam.

3. An email offering to improve out energy costs. Just more rubbish from a lead generation company.

4. A message from Google offering to help get us started with advertising through Google. Only the email is actually from a domain name eloc-google.com which is not part of Google, just some scammer trying to con people.

5. A message from the Abu Dhabi Investment council. Impressive. They want to collaborate with us on new investments. It’s a lengthy email setting out how they operate and doesn’t promise sky high returns. Of course it’s just another pathetic scam, although it is written better than most.

These people just waste our time and clog up the Internet with rubbish.

Julie Deals With Cold Callers By Being Caring

Julie is a committed Christian and does not want to make life difficult for cold callers.

Her natural response to such callers is to talk with them.

After their opening pitch, she asks something such as

“I’m curious, why did you choose this job?

Or “Shame, it must be really hard calling people up with a marketing script all day long”

And she is genuinely interested in the answers.

They do tend to end the call but if they stay on and start to talk then Julie takes the opportunity to tell them about her Christian beliefs and how that affects her life.

When busy, Julie does just say No to callers and puts the phone down as most people do, but that doesn’t get your number taken off their calling lists so you will get more calls.

A Part Time Job Laundering Money

The email is titled “Application for Part-Time Work” and appears to be from a software company.

It explains that they are a new business in financial analysis software.

Sounds legitimate.

They have a problem in taking payments for their software from overseas. And the resolution of the problem is to appoint local agents in each country to accept the payments and send them on to the company.

The local agent gets 10% of each contract for their efforts.

It is described as being a part-time job but quite lucrative. And there is no cost up front. Just supply your details to the company and start making money.

This whole setup is fake of course. Any business that has problems taking payment for their product wouldn’t survive in business.

The process of taking payments and passing them on sounds very easy – it is. Problem is that it’s called money laundering and is distinctly illegal.

Criminals often do use unsuspecting innocents to take in money and pass it on, but that’s a crime, not a part-time job.

This website is all about female scammers who lure men into fake relationships in order to scam money from them. The site has an impressive amount of information including over ninety thousand photos of scammers, twelve thousand scam letter sets and seventeen thousand published reports.

Stop-Scammers.com says it is the place to find the most up-to-date information on female scammers anywhere in the world. The database lists known scammers together with corroborating evidence like correspondence, photos, countries of known operation and documentation commonly used by these international thieves.

SCAM SCENARIOS

There are many scenarios including she feigns illness and needs money for treatment, or she needs money to fly to meet you but the most common is called the standard scenario.

STANDARD SCENARIO

The scammer maintains regular correspondence but all of the letters have only general content, lacking in details. After a few letters, she needs to start getting money from you. Maybe to buy a computer or to pay a fine or for a language course – could be any reason. She may claim her money was stolen or that she has to escape from her home. Whatever the reason – she wants money and as long as you keep providing it then the relationship continues. As soon as you stop paying, the relationship stops and you won’t hear from her again

The Unknown Heir Scam

These emails claim to be from some official sounding organisation such as a foreign bank or foreign government department.

There are typically three parts to these scam emails

A claim to be officially searching for an heir
Statements or questions that lead you into believing that you could be the heir to a fortune
A request for identity information

A typical such email to the Brooklands Radio station claims to be from a consulting company working for Ivesco Banco in Spain and they have been engaged to verify the heir to a very large sum of money remaining in an account at Ivesco Banco.

Then it states that the client account holder has a name matching mine. It doesn’t say what that name is of course as the email goes out to many thousands if not millions of people.

Then comes the part where they have to convince me that I could be the heir.

Question 1 says: Are you aware of any relation who may have lived in Spain?

Question 2 says: Are you aware of any investment made by your relative?

Then it goes on to ask Can you assume the status of the heir to the deceased?

Many people will have or had a relative that lived in Spain for part or all of their Life or at least visited Spain. And the email asks if you can assume the status of heir – that leads to false thoughts of Yes I can do that (and become very rich)

So the scam works.

Of course there is no money, this is a 419 scam meaning the scammers convince you it is real then will need payment up front in some form to release the funds. But the funds don’t exist. You lose.

Don’t try to be an heir unless you actually knew the deceased person.

What Are Those Time-Wasters Up To Now?

So, what rubbish emails and calls have there been to Brooklands Radio station in the last few days?

An email offering roof repairs – the roof isn’t our problem as we rent the place.

An email from someone wanting to partner us in making die-casting machines – not exactly our line of business. We’re a radio station.

8 very similar emails about tickets and hospitality for the Henley Regatta – but the emails are all from untappedbuyertraffic.com which means they are just lead generation rubbish. If you reply then your details are passed on to numerous people trying to sell tickets to Henley.

Yet another in the stream of emails about vehicle tracking – but it’s really just trying to find out which email addresses are valid so they can be sold to spammers.

A professional email from an IT services company about moving computer servers to the Internet Cloud – not a scam or spam really but irrelevant to us as we’re a volunteer organisation which they would know if they’d bothered to check.

These people just waste our time and clog up the Internet with rubbish.
