You get an email that looks official titled “Booking Confirmation / ADV98863L”
It goes on
“BOOKING CONFIRMATION”Did you really make this hotel booking?
“We are pleased to confirm your reservation and look forward to welcoming you to the Park Avenue Hotel. You will find your booking details below.”
“Please print booking confirmation attached and present at reception when checking in.”
Then lots of details about the supposed booking.
Now, many people’s first reaction may be to assume that someone has booked in their name and they had better phone the hotel immediately to cancel the booking.
The could look up the phone number on the Internet but may unthinkingly open the email attachment expecting it to have the phone number.
Of course this is just a scam designed to get you to open the attached file which may contain a virus or other malware.
Although the email is well written, it is obviously fake.
The senders email address is @paperlow.co.de which is clearly not the Park Avenue Hotel.
And in this case the email is sent to a general email address not a person and there are no contact details.
Fake.
