This scam is prevalent in Australia and New Zealand but also seen around the world.
The scammers approach people under the guise of a recruitment company that has identified them as a good candidate for jobs they have available.
The scammers ‘organise an interview’ and ask for the candidate’s latest details to be uploaded to their website. Included in this is a request for bank details to allow salary payments to be arranged.
Those details can then be used by the scammers to take out bank loans in the victim’s name.
When the loans are paid to the victim’s bank account, the scammers contact the victim to explain that a funds transfer was made in error and they should pay the money back i.e. to the scammer’s bank account.
A lot of people have been caught out by this, as many are seeking jobs and trust the “recruitment agencies”.
There is no good reason for a recruitment agency to need your bank details and no good reason for any prospective employer to ask for such details until you have started work for them.
