Joanna sent me a copy of an obvious scam email she had received several times.
This is a standard scam targeting council taxpayers and offers them some money back.
The message tries to look like it’s from Council Tax – Gov.uk but is in fact from faybale @hotmail.com.
Obviously genuine council officials do not use hotmail personal email accounts for business.
The subject title of the message is a bit of overkill –
“Subject:GOV.UK – Reference: CTR2020/C31CTR-Number: 180059005107 – COUNCILTAXGOVUK- Message on August-20 15:57:11 BST – Your GOV.UK important order #203-9320557-23482748 has been dispatchedwmnbvhcwtyhd”
The message body has a minimum explanation as to why you’re getting a refund then announces that £385.40 will be paid directly to your debit/credit card.
You just have to click the link to confirm.
The link is actually to euroflag.lu which is a website based in Luxembourg.
This scam message has probably been sent to a lot of millions of people in order to catch anyone.
Well spotted Joanna.
If you have any experiences with phishing scams do let me know, by email.
