The recent EU referendum vote for Brexit has opened up a new line in scam messages.
The email title is typically something like “Brexit causes historic market drop”.
The email contains some basic facts about Brexit and is doom laden – quotes about market losses and job losses etc.
And it contains links to advice on what to do about finance and stocks and shares and pensions.
But the links to advice are to a website that will download malicious software such as a virus or a key checker that records every key you press on the keyboard. The scammer can download this information and potentially extract your login and password details or even credit card details.
These emails are different to the run of the mill mass mailout spam messages as they are targeted at people who have been talking about Brexit on social media. Because of this they can use your name in the email rather than just your email address.
DO not click on the links on any such emails – just delete the emails.
