Home Insulation Fraudster Jailed

Home insulation fraudster Adam Roberts targeted pensioners to fund his extravagant lifestyle, which included a £90,000 Aston Martin and a Rolex watch.

Adam Roberts ran a fraudulent business selling home insulation to pensioners at hugely inflated prices and has now been jailed for three years.

He charged pensioners in Surrey , Hampshire, Dorset and Devon ludicrous prices for home insulation while falsely claiming it would save them money on their council tax and energy bills.

In many cases, victims had recently had their homes insulated under a government scheme, meaning the work was also unnecessary.

Judge Rufus Talyor said: “It seems clear to me that there was an effort to target the elderly and vulnerable,” mentioning the victims were all aged 65 or older and some had serious health problems including blindness and memory difficulties.

Adam Roberts’ business  Eco Energy Advice Ltd (EEA), traded for just one year between 2015 and 2016, making £1.5 million, although not all of its income was the result of misleading sales techniques.

During that time, Roberts described himself as the CEO or “the King”, despite being subject to a bankruptcy order prohibiting him from operating a business. He circumvented this order by having his sister, Laura Oxley, act as EEA’s only named director.

Judge Taylor said EEA had operated “almost like a boiler room”, with numerous telesales agents cold calling pensioners and saying “almost anything to get someone through the door”.

Field sales agents would then visit customers to sign them up to the scheme, telling them their insulation was dangerous or out of date, even when perfectly serviceable, and promising fictitious discounts or council tax rebates to pressure them into signing up.

A reputable company will never ask you to agree straight away to work. If you have been subjected to heavy handed sales resulting in undue pressure or unfair pricing, then do report them to Trading Standards.

Domain Name Theft

Your Internet domain name e.g. mybusiness.co.uk can be very valuable and a key part of your business. Without it, online customers won’t be able to find your website or may be redirected without their knowledge to a copycat site.

You may think it’s impossible for someone to take your domain name but it does happen and the scammers are clever in how they do it, leaving you with the difficult task of proving you are the rightful owner.

For a hacker to take your domain name, there are two basic methods:-

  1. They change your DNS configuration, to redirect traffic from your site to their site
  2. They modify your registration contact information, which gives them full control over your domain

A hacker can also change the registration data in the WHOIS database. This then makes it difficult for you to prove that you are the rightful owner. If they have control, then the hacker may also move the domain registration to another registrar which makes it more difficult to get your domain name back.

Q. How Can Hackers Access Your Domain Account?

The most common method is through a phishing attack. They send you emails that look to be from some official body, such as the domain registrar and get you to click a link to their fake website page and use your login and password thus giving them your login credentials.

Alternatively they get your login credentials from a data breach or simply buy the information from another hacker who has employed phishing attacks etc.

Protecting Your Domain

Prevention is the key, rather than planning what to do in the event of such a problem.

Ensure a strong password and that only you know the password for domain control, guard against phishing attacks and anything out of the ordinary regarding your domain.  The most effective control is domain locking.

Domain Locking

You can ‘lock’ your domain, which means that changes will not be allowed unless you ‘unlock’ the domain.  Your domain registrar will do this for you and it’s normally a free service.

Domain locking also stops unauthorised transfer of your domain name to another registrar.

Keep your domain name safe.

Improving the Quality of Consumer Reviews

Research shows that it is generally the people with strong opinions who leave product reviews and the majority without strong opinions tend not to leave so many reviews.

So that leaves most people with no voice, by their own choice.

Bigger companies, usually have more customers, which can mean a higher likelihood of more reviews, which can mean more potential customers reading the reviews which can lead to more sales.

This can be a virtuous circle for big brands.

Research by Sinan Aral for MIT suggests that some reviews can be systematically biased.

“Social proof”, a psychological and social phenomenon where people assume the actions of others in an attempt to reflect correct behaviour in a given situation may be the basis for this.

Improving the Quality of Consumer Reviews

Reviews are shown to have a significant effect on consumer decision-making and it is important for people responsible for getting reviews (Marketing agencies and businesses) to do what they can to ensure the quality of their customers’ reviews.

  • Request feedback. The higher the percentage of customers that leave reviews, the better for the accuracy or the reviews overall. This can also reduce review bias and balance review sentiment. Requests can be through feedback surveys or simple questions post purchase.
  • Remind customers that their opinion helps others. When asking for feedback, social reinforcement goes a long way and can also lead to a better balance of reviews.
  • Provide incentives. These can be money rewards, but freebies, discounts, access to special offers etc. can also work.
  • Leave an appropriate length of time after purchase before asking for the review. E.g. PC World wait 28 days after purchase before asking for reviews.
